Haringey Council is set to appoint a Poverty Commissioner to lead efforts in tackling poverty and inequality within the borough. The decision was made during a Full Council meeting on Monday, March 16, 2026.

The motion, proposed by Councillor Mary Mason and seconded by Councillor Mark Blake, highlighted significant issues in Haringey, including a high unemployment rate, a substantial number of bailiff-led repossessions, and a considerable proportion of residents not eating a healthy diet. It also noted that systemic racism contributes to poverty among Black residents, and that approximately 3,000 families are living in temporary accommodation, making Haringey the fourth most deprived local authority area in London.

The council resolved to appoint a Poverty Commissioner who will convene an elected and representative group of residents with lived experience of poverty. This group will be tasked with reporting on current issues, identifying necessary changes, and presenting their findings to a dedicated Full Council meeting.
