Haringey Council has formally backed the Together Alliance
campaign, a movement aimed at countering extremism and divisive rhetoric.
The decision was made during a Full Council meeting on Monday, March 16, 2026, where councillors debated and passed a motion supporting the alliance's message of hope over fear.
The motion highlighted the rise of divisive and racist rhetoric, which it stated exploits economic problems to scapegoat various communities. It noted that divisive and racist rhetoric of extremism is an increasingly common presence online and on our streets. Their false promises seize on the very real economic problems people face, in order to scapegoat migrants, asylum seekers, refugees, Muslims, Jews, and other faith and global majority communities.
It emphasised that all tiers of government must deliver policies and investment to address community challenges, tackle wealth inequality, and reject all forms of racism and discrimination.

In response, the council resolved to renew our commitments as a Borough of Welcome, and work with residents to develop our new Welcome Strategy – ensuring anyone who calls Haringey home is treated with dignity and respect.
They also pledged to endorse the Together Alliance's message and continue working with community networks and the Multi-Faith Forum to challenge national narratives, build unity, and combat xenophobia, antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-black racism, and all forms of discrimination. The council also committed to working with anti-racist and human rights campaign groups opposing hate groups.
The Together Alliance
itself is described as a campaign offering a platform of 'love, unity and hope' to oppose the far right and the politics of division.
It is supported by UK charities, trade unions, civil society organisations, and politicians.
Councillor Lucia das Neves, who proposed the motion, and Councillor Seema Chandwani, who seconded it, were instrumental in bringing this initiative before the council. The motion was passed, signalling the council's stance against extremism and its commitment to fostering unity within the borough.
