Harrow Council's Cabinet has approved a major flood alleviation scheme for Wealdstone Brook, which will see the construction of a substantial underground storage tank and a new wetland basin. The scheme aims to increase flood protection for over 100 homes and businesses in the Wealdstone area, which are at risk of flooding during storm events. Key sites that will benefit include the Council Hub and Elm Grove School.

The scheme will divert flood water from Wealdstone Brook to a 12,000 cubic meter underground storage tank and an 8,000 cubic meter wetland basin in Byron Recreation Ground during storm events. This will provide 20,000m³ of flood water storage, significantly reducing flood risk to over 100 properties. The scheme is a joint effort funded by Thames Water (£6.3 million) and the Environment Agency (£2.8 million).

In addition to flood defence improvements, the project will bring wider enhancements. The council anticipates the works will contribute to the park achieving Green Flag accreditation, with specific improvements expected to include a new playground and path enhancements. The wetland basin will also create new habitats, improving biodiversity and water quality. The report mentions that the proposed wetland area will provide new wildlife habitat and increase biodiversity.

Procurement for the contractor has already begun, with construction on site expected to commence later this year. The works are anticipated to take between nine and twelve months to complete.

Councillor David Ashton, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Highways, highlighted the scheme's importance in putting residents first and contributing to a cleaner and safer borough. He also noted that the wetland basin will create new habitats, improving biodiversity and water quality.

The Cabinet also delegated authority to the Strategic Director of Culture, Environment and Economy to enter into any necessary legal agreements using the approved funds. The underground storage tank will be acquired and maintained by Thames Water, while the wetland will be added to the Parks and Infrastructure Team's routine asset management maintenance schedule.
