Newham Council's Cabinet has approved a £2 million upgrade to the borough's public space CCTV network, aiming to enhance public safety and improve crime prevention and detection capabilities.
The investment, drawn from the corporate capital budget, will see the replacement of aging equipment, an extension of coverage in priority locations, and an upgrade to the radio transmission network. Advanced video analytics technology will also be introduced to bolster real-time response capabilities.
The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. The upgrade programme is intended to improve image quality and evidential value, supporting the Council's commitment to enhanced public safety.
While the upgrade aims to bolster safety, measures are in place to address potential privacy concerns. The advanced video analytics technology
will have its analytical functions strictly limited to non-biometric data, such as clothing, objects, and behavioural indicators. These analytics will operate under strong and transparent safeguards, including human oversight of all system-generated alerts, full compliance with the CCTV Operators Procedures Manual, and strict adherence to the Council's data protection framework.^[1]
A contract for project management and technical expertise was also approved as part of the modernisation effort.
