Croydon Council's cabinet has approved a £17.6 million plan to upgrade the borough's highways. The Highways Capital Programme for 2026/27 will see a £5 million increase in investment compared to the previous year, focusing on planned maintenance to enhance road quality and reduce future costs.

The approved programme includes significant investment in resurfacing, patching, drainage, flood alleviation, and bridge maintenance across Croydon's extensive highway network, which spans over 700 kilometres of roads. The programme is evidence-led and developed using condition survey, safety inspections, data-led assessments, and feedback from residents, businesses, and local ward councillors to ensure that maintenance is truly preventative.

Councillor Scott Roche, Cabinet Member for Streets and Environment, highlighted the programme's focus on preventative maintenance. This programme focuses on prevention rather than quick fixes. By resurfacing roads, repairing pavements, and strengthening bridges before they deteriorate, we save money in the long run, reduce the need for disruptive emergency repairs, he stated.

The plan also incorporates measures for flood alleviation, including clearing and surveying drains, improving soak-aways, and installing new monitoring equipment to enhance response times during heavy rainfall.

Funding for the programme is secured through the Council's capital programme and does not increase day-to-day running costs. The investment aligns with the Executive Mayor's commitment to delivering sustainable services and creating a cleaner, safer, and healthier Croydon.
