Islington Council's Executive has approved plans for new extra care housing at Lindsay Apartments on the Holloway Park site, a decision made at the Executive meeting on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.
The development will see approximately 60 units of extra care housing created. Councillor Dr Sara Hyde, Executive Member for Health and Social Care, described the initiative as exciting.
She explained that the new housing will cater to residents who can live independently but require additional care services, fitting within the council's adult social care provision. This type of housing bridges the gap between independent living with visiting care and residential care.

The scheme is designed to be intergenerational, with the majority of residents expected to be over 55. The development aims to increase the availability of such housing within the borough and facilitate the return of residents currently living outside Islington who require these facilities. The meeting information suggests that the new extra care housing will free up some capacity in borough
and enable residents who are currently out of borough to return, implying a positive impact on existing housing stock and potentially reducing waiting lists for those needing such facilities.
Councillor Hyde added that the project is expected to foster stronger community connections. The procurement strategy for the extra care service was approved, with the council anticipating positive outcomes based on similar schemes implemented elsewhere in the country. The approved procurement strategy can be found in the Procurement strategy for Holloway Extra Care
document.
