Bexley's recycling rates have seen an improvement, bucking a London-wide trend of decline.
Councillor David Diamond, Cabinet Member for Place Shaping, highlighted the borough's strong performance in recycling during a Public Cabinet meeting on Thursday, April 9, 2026. He noted that Bexley was one of the few London boroughs to improve its recycling rate in the past year, placing it among the best performing in the capital. In fact, Bexley has come out not quite at the top but very close to the top of the London boroughs
for recycling, and was the only one to actually move forward last year
compared to the other four boroughs in the top tier, which all saw their percentages decline.

This positive news comes as the council reviewed its performance for the third quarter of the financial year, covering October to December 2025. While most indicators showed positive trends, Councillor Diamond specifically pointed to the recycling figures as a credit to the residents' efforts in ensuring waste is disposed of correctly.
Bexley's success in improving recycling rates has been attributed to specific initiatives, including meeting the requirement under the simpler recycling proposals to ensure that every household in Bexley does have the opportunity to be able to recycle food waste in their home.
This was achieved by the end of March, in time for new standards.
The meeting information, available in the Public reports pack 09th-Apr-2026 19.30 Public Cabinet, also reviewed other performance indicators for the third quarter of the financial year. Further details on the borough's status report for Q3 2025 can be found in Appendix A Bexley Status Report Q3 25.
