Bexley Council has approved a 4.99% increase in Council Tax for the 2026/27 financial year, citing severe national funding pressures and cuts in Government grants as a key reason for the rise.

The decision was made during a Council meeting on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, where the General Fund Budget of £271.950 million was approved. The increase comprises a 2.99% rise in the standard Council Tax share and an additional 2% for the Adult Social Care precept.

The budget also includes a £5 million contingency provision and a capital programme of £145 million. This significant investment will fund improvements to highways, playgrounds, libraries, and community centres. Specifically, £30 million has been allocated over four years for highways maintenance and £2.5 million for playground improvements, with further investment planned for libraries and community centres. However, a detailed timeline for all projects within the capital programme has not yet been published.

The Council also noted the Greater London Authority's (GLA) precept of £510.51 for a Band D property.

Further details on the Council's budget and financial plans can be found in the Supplementary Report presented at the meeting.
