Lewisham has officially welcomed its new Young Mayor and Deputy Young Mayor, marking a significant continuation of a programme that has been running for over two decades and is noted as the longest-running in the country.
Tyrese Gale and Izzy McDonald were appointed to the roles of Young Mayor and Deputy Young Mayor for 2026-2027 at a Lewisham Council meeting on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. They will serve for a one-year term, acting as spokespersons for the borough's young people and advising the Mayor and Council on issues affecting them.
The Young Mayor programme, established in 2004, has a proven track record of ensuring that the voices of young people are not only heard but are embedded in how the council makes decisions. This year's selection process saw Tyrese and Izzy chosen through a democratic process involving schools and colleges across the borough.
Beyond their roles as spokespersons and advisors, the Young Mayor will support the borough's young people and oversee a budget of at least £25,000. The council actively incorporates the feedback from the Young Mayor, who informs and advises the mayor on issues relating to young people. Furthermore, the Young Mayor works with young advisors and the young citizens' panel to inform the work of the mayor, Council, and other decision-making bodies.
Young people in Lewisham have multiple avenues to engage with and contribute to the Young Mayor programme. They can become part of the young advisors and the young citizens' panel, groups that collaborate with the elected Young Mayor and Deputy Young Mayor to shape priorities and policy.
Outgoing Deputy Young Mayor, Jermaine Lee, reflected on his and outgoing Young Mayor Shane Grant's experiences at the meeting. He highlighted their participation in civic events and community activities and expressed confidence in the incoming duo. Further details on the council's proceedings can be found in the Public reports pack and the Agenda frontsheet from the meeting. The Minutes of the last meeting are also available.
