Councillor Muhammad Sadiq has been elected as the new Mayor of the London Borough of Sutton for the municipal year 2026-2027, a term that marks a new chapter in the borough's local governance.
The council convened on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, to elect its new Mayor. The process for selecting the Mayor involves nominations, with one councillor moving the nomination and another seconding it. If there are no other nominations, the nominated councillor is declared elected. Councillor Sadiq, who has served the council for many years, was elected unopposed.
Councillor Sadiq outlined his vision for his term, stating his intention to champion and support the local community, promote the borough, and raise funds for his chosen charities: The Kidney Fund at St. Helier Hospital and St. Raphael's Hospice in Cheam.
His plans also include efforts to bring jobs and investment to Sutton, facilitate house building, support local businesses, and protect green spaces.
The primary responsibilities of the Mayor of Sutton include championing and supporting the local community, promoting the borough, and raising funds for his chosen charities.
The role also involves attending hundreds of events, opening everything from community fairs, summer fairs and drinking more cups of tea than is perhaps medically advised,
representing every resident with dignity, warmth and a bit of good humour.
He thanked the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Louise Phelan, and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Cumar Sahathevan, for their service. During Councillor Phelan's term, she attended numerous events, including coffee mornings and visited Your Space in Cheam
to discuss park cottage restoration. She also attended the 85th Anniversary Dinner of 350 (Carshalton and Wallington) Squadron ATC and opened a new Lidl store. Two fundraising events were announced during her tenure: a Mayor's Charities Karaoke Night
and a Mayor's Charities Quiz Night.
Notably, over the past decade, Christine Lindsay and the Mayor's Charity Committee have raised a whopping £270,000 for the Mayor's Charities.
Councillor Chris Manasour was appointed as the new Deputy Mayor by the newly elected Mayor, Councillor Muhammad Sadiq.
Councillor Barry Lewis, Leader of the Council, congratulated Councillor Sadiq on his election. The full details of the council meeting can be found in the Public reports pack and the Agenda frontsheet.
