Councillor Emmeline Owens has been elected as the new Mayor of Wandsworth, securing 29 votes in the election held on Wednesday, 27th May 2026. She will serve for the municipal year 2026/27, as the Mayor of Wandsworth is elected annually for the ensuing year.

Councillor Owens, affiliated with the Conservative Party, defeated Councillor Graeme Henderson of the Labour Party, who received 26 votes. There was also one abstention in the vote. The council is currently in a period of no overall control following recent borough elections, suggesting a need for collaborative arrangements between parties.

Proposing Councillor Owens, Councillor Ethan Brooks described her as wonderfully, unmistakably Wandsworth. He highlighted her deep connection to the borough, referencing her roles as a rugby mum and a long-standing school governor.

The primary responsibilities of the Mayor of Wandsworth include chairing council meetings and fulfilling the duties of the office according to the best of my judgement and ability. The Mayor also acts as the borough's first citizen and a conductor for its soft power. The outgoing Mayor, Jeremy Ambache, also noted the role's importance in welcoming schoolchildren, supporting chosen charities, and presiding over community events.

Further details regarding the council meeting can be found in the Public reports pack and the Agenda frontsheet.
