Wandsworth Council is set to usher in a new era of political engagement, with opposition councillors being invited to chair scrutiny committees for the first time. The move, announced by newly elected Council Leader Councillor Simon Hogg during the annual council meeting on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, aims to foster an atmosphere of maximum challenge, scrutiny and constructive working.
Councillor Hogg stated that his administration would run the council and will take the tough decisions, but in an atmosphere of maximum challenge, scrutiny and constructive working.
To facilitate this, opposition councillors will be invited to chair scrutiny committees, and the Leader of the Opposition and Cabinet members will be invited to attend Cabinet meetings. Councillor Aled Richards-Jones further elaborated that we'll make it easier for all councillors, of all parties and none, to get the information they need, to stand up for their residents, and to participate fully in our proceedings.
The council's political landscape shifted following the borough elections on May 7, 2026, which resulted in no single party achieving overall control. Councillor Hogg acknowledged this change, emphasising the need for new, more collaborative arrangements between the two parties.
Councillor Richards-Jones added that the invitation for the leader of the opposition and Cabinet members to attend Cabinet meetings is intended to join the discussions, to challenge our decisions and hold us to account,
suggesting an aim to increase accountability through greater opposition involvement in the council's decision-making process.
