Croydon Council has appointed Councillor Mohamed Islam as its new Civic Mayor for the 2026-2027 municipal year, following a nomination process that highlighted his extensive community involvement.
The appointment was confirmed at the Council meeting held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. Councillor Islam, who has represented Selhurst Ward since 2022 and has been a resident of Croydon since the 1980s, was nominated for the role, with his background and community service being key considerations.
Mayor Jason Perry expressed his pleasure in supporting the nomination, stating, As the civic mayoralty passes to the Labour Group this year, I'm pleased to support the nomination of Mohamed Islam as civic mayor.
Councillor Stuart King, who seconded the nomination, described Councillor Islam's journey as very much a Croydon story about family and hard work, service, community, and giving back to the borough that not only became his home, but that shaped the person and the public servant that he is.

Councillor Islam articulated his vision for his term, aiming to make the Civic Mayor's office accessible, inclusive and rooted in the community.
He intends to celebrate the people who quietly make a difference every single day,
recognising the contributions of volunteers, carers, teachers, faith leaders, charities, emergency services, local businesses, youth workers, and community organisations. He also expressed a desire to use this role to bring communities together, encourage civic pride and promote the values that unite us: Respect, kindness, compassion and understanding.
He looks forward to attending a variety of civic, cultural, charitable, educational, and community events to showcase the best of Croydon.
Councillor Islam is a founding member of the British Bangladeshi Society of Croydon, an organisation dedicated to supporting local residents through educational programmes, health and wellbeing support, cultural activities, and community engagement. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a significant role in the society's efforts, working with trustees to run a food bank and deliver hot meals to NHS staff and those experiencing homelessness when he was unable to work.
He will be supported in his civic duties by his wife, Farhana Islam, who will serve as Mayoress. Councillor Islam acknowledged her vital role, stating, Tonight, I would like to especially thank my wife, Farhana Islam, for her unwavering support, patience and encouragement. And strength has been the foundation of everything I have achieved. Public life requires sacrifice, not only from those elected, but also from their families. And I could not undertake this role without her beside me.
Councillor Scott Roche also welcomed Mrs. Islam, anticipating she will be a tremendous support during the year ahead, and I look forward to working with you both as you represent our borough across Croydon's many communities and civic events.
