Enfield Council has seen a significant shift in its political landscape, with the Conservative Party now leading the administration following the recent local elections. The Council comprises 63 elected members, with the Conservatives securing 31 seats, Labour 27, and the Green Party 5.
At the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, Councillor Emma Supple was elected as the new Mayor of Enfield, and Councillor Chris Joannides as Deputy Mayor. The meeting marked the end of Labour's long tenure, with Councillor Alessandro Georgiou elected as the new Leader of the Council.
Councillor Georgiou, in his acceptance speech, pledged good governance, public service and absolute transparency.
He announced immediate plans to withdraw Enfield from the Newtown process
and formally inform Tottenham Hotspur Football Club that they are no longer welcome to develop on Whitewebs Park. Additionally, political crony Associate Cabinet Member posts
will be deleted, saving £32,940 annually.
An amendment to the Members' Allowances Scheme for 2026/27 was approved, introducing a Special Responsibility Allowance (SRA) of £8,235 per annum for the Leader of the second largest Opposition Group. This change, which aligns with recommendations from the London Councils Independent Remuneration Panel, is intended to reflect the responsibilities of the role and ensure that serving as a councillor is not financially prohibitive. The cost of this allowance will be met from existing budgets.
Beyond these initial announcements, Councillor Georgiou's broader long-term vision for the council is not yet detailed.
