Barnet Trading Standards has seized over £500,000 worth of illegal goods and secured significant penalties against rogue traders in the past year, according to a report presented to the Licensing and General Purposes Committee.
The team's annual report for 2025-2026 detailed a busy period, during which they received over 1,600 consumer complaints. Enforcement operations, often conducted in partnership with other agencies including the Metropolitan Police and the Home Office, led to the confiscation of more than 26,000 illegal items. These seizures, estimated to have a market value exceeding half a million pounds, targeted a range of illicit products.
Beyond the confiscation of goods, the enforcement operations yielded substantial results. These included two successful criminal prosecutions, the closure of three businesses for illegal trading, and the issuance of nineteen warning letters. Furthermore, significant fines totalling over £123,000 were levied against letting agents, and seven cases were referred for investigation under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Yvette Lynch, Head of Counter Fraud and Trading Standards, presented the findings. The committee noted the report and its outcomes, which are detailed in the Public reports pack.
