A new zebra crossing is set to be installed on Coombe Lane West, specifically outside house numbers 54/56, after Kingston Council's Place Committee approved the scheme. The decision, made at a meeting on Thursday, June 4, 2026, followed a consultation where 50 residents responded, with 60% supporting the introduction of the crossing.

The proposal aims to enhance pedestrian safety, particularly for children and the elderly, and encourage traffic calming measures on the road. Coombe Lane West is subject to a 20mph speed limit, but speeds have been recorded above 23mph. The new crossing is intended to encourage lower traffic speeds and calmer traffic
and will help mitigate this issue by encouraging lower speeds.
The scheme had previously received backing from the New and Old Malden and Kingston and North Kingston Neighbourhood Committees.
Concerns raised by some residents included potential traffic congestion, pollution, and safety hazards near driveways. A total of 50 residents responded to the consultation. Those who did not support the crossing raised concerns including potential traffic congestion and pollution, safety hazards near driveways due to zig-zag markings, and site suitability regarding flooding. Council officers addressed these issues, noting that the design incorporates drainage solutions and that zig-zag markings are a legal requirement for visibility. Officers stated that the final design details will specifically address these concerns
regarding safety hazards for driveways and that the waiting restrictions (zig zags), which ensure clear sight lines, were explained by the officers at both Committees where this issue was discussed.

The project is funded by Transport for London's Local Implementation Plan grant and is scheduled for implementation in the summer.
