Islington Council's Executive has approved plans to appropriate an unnamed road between 125 and 142 York Way, transferring it from the Housing Revenue Account to the General Fund highways. This move is a key step in facilitating the creation of the Cally Liveable Neighbourhood.

The decision, made at the Executive meeting on Thursday 25 June 2026, will see the strip of council-owned land adjacent to Fish Central also added to the approved list of assets for disposal. The appropriation of the road, which is located in front of commercial premises, will be at nil value, with no budgets transferred between funds. This is a crucial step to enable the completion of the York Way Gardens project as part of the wider Cally Liveable Neighbourhood initiative.

The Cally Liveable Neighbourhood project aims to enhance public spaces and improve the local environment. Specific changes include the removal of vehicle access from Copenhagen Street, decluttering through the removal of redundant street furniture, and the elimination of all existing parking bays in the immediate area. The green space will be upgraded with newly designed planting beds, integrated playful elements, and new seating. Additional cycle parking and improved lighting are also planned. A new designated loading bay will be provided, with access restricted to York Way only. Collectively, these changes will create a wider pavement area, which may present opportunities for businesses to apply for additional outdoor trading space.

While these changes will directly impact the immediate vicinity of York Way Gardens, the broader implications for traffic flow and parking across the entire Cally area are not yet detailed. Further information on the specific plans for the road and adjacent land is expected to be released as the project progresses.
