Hackney Council's Cabinet has approved an additional £350,000 investment towards the refurbishment and repurposing of two council-owned properties to create new children's homes. This brings the total investment in the project to £1.35 million.

The decision, made at a Cabinet meeting on Monday, June 29, 2026, will see the properties at 38 Firsby Road and 15 Triangle Road converted into much-needed residential spaces for children in the borough's care. These new homes are intended to provide high-quality, local accommodation for six children with complex needs, aiming to reduce the council's reliance on expensive, private sector providers located far from Hackney and London.

The refurbishment and repurposing project is projected to be completed by October 2026, with a subsequent 12-month defects period extending to October 2028. The council aims to ensure the safety and well-being of the children by keeping them close to home and their support networks. Architectural designs are being finalised following consultation with established voluntary sector providers and other local authority-run children's homes to ensure the facilities are fit for purpose.

The investment is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of experience for Hackney's care-experienced children. The council's Cabinet meeting details can be found in the Agenda frontsheet, the Public reports pack, and the Decisions document.
