Mez Lounge has been granted a partial licence to sell alcohol and play music, with new conditions in place to control noise levels. The Waltham Forest Licensing Act 2003 Sub-Committee met on Thursday, July 9, 2026, to consider the application.

The venue, located at 627-629 Lea Bridge Road, E10 6AJ, will now be able to sell alcohol from 11:00 to 23:00 Sunday to Thursday, and 11:00 to 00:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Live music, recorded music, late-night refreshment, and performances of dance will be permitted on Fridays and Saturdays between 23:00 and 00:00.

However, the committee imposed additional conditions following significant concerns raised by the Licensing Authority and the AQEP Team regarding public nuisance and crime and disorder. These concerns were amplified by previous noise nuisance issues highlighted by Environmental Health. Specifically, an Abatement Notice was served on the previous licence holder, Joscy Mezu, on 30 April 2026, due to the premises causing a statutory noise nuisance by playing amplified music at an unreasonable level. The complainant also noted disruption from the rear garden area at night, with customers talking loudly, slamming doors, and congregating outside.

Further concerns from the Licensing Authority and AQEP Team included the potential impact of the licensable activity times on the premises and surrounding area, as well as the external seating areas (front and rear garden). They were worried about potential nuisance from customers in these locations impacting residents if used late into the evening or early hours. Notably, the applicant was a director of a previous licence holder, Mez Entertainment Limited, which consistently failed to use a noise limiter as agreed, leading to complaints about loud music and anti-social behaviour. A review of that premises licence was no longer pursued because the company had dissolved.

To address these issues, Mez Lounge must install and maintain a noise limiter on all amplified music systems, ensuring it is set and sealed to the satisfaction of authorised officers. Furthermore, the outside/garden area to the rear of the premises will not be permitted for use after 22:00 hours daily.

The premises opening hours will be Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 to 23:30, and Friday to Saturday from 11:00 to 00:30. Non-standard timings were approved from 11:00 to 02:00.

Parties involved have the right to appeal this decision to Thames Magistrates' Court within twenty-one days of notification. The full details of the committee's decision can be found in the Decisions 09th-Jul-2026 10.00 Licensing Act 2003 Sub-Committee document.
