Hackney Council is set to significantly expand its green skills training programme, aiming to equip more residents with the expertise needed for the burgeoning green economy. The move was highlighted during a recent Skills, Economy and Growth Scrutiny Commission meeting, where cabinet members provided updates on their achievements and priorities for the coming year.

The expansion will see the council commission 17 green skill courses with over 600 learner places in 2025/26, building on the 12 green-focused adult learning courses already delivered, which saw participation from 360 residents.

The council's commitment to green skills is part of a broader effort to address climate change and promote a sustainable economy. The expansion of green skills training aligns with Hackney's strategic plan, Working Together for a Better Hackney , and its goal to create a greener, healthier borough.

Councillor Carole Williams, Cabinet Member for Employment, HR, Inequalities, noted that Ofsted rated the adult learning programme as good, highlighting its ambitious curriculum, inclusive practice, and strong links to employment support. The council has also launched a Green Skills Hub to support residents in gaining the skills needed for jobs in the green economy.

The council is working with Central London Forward on a crossborough communications plan to promote green skills and will publish data and guidance for future delivery to help scale up and target future investment.

The expansion of green skills training is expected to benefit residents across the borough, providing them with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in the green economy. The council's commitment to sustainability and inclusive growth is evident in its efforts to provide residents with access to quality training and employment opportunities.

The Skills, Economy and Growth Scrutiny Commission will continue to monitor the progress of the green skills training programme and other initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable economic growth in Hackney. The commission plans to invite cabinet members back for future meetings to discuss specific topics in more detail.
