Tower Hamlets Council has approved an extension to its school uniform grant, aiming to provide further financial support to families facing rising living costs. The decision, made by the council's Cabinet, will see the income threshold for eligible households increase to £60,000, up from the previous threshold of £50,000.
The grant will now cover more year groups, including Reception, Primary Year 3, Secondary Year 7, and Secondary Year 10.
Mayor Lutfur Rahman highlighted the importance of the grant, stating that it was a manifesto commitment that the council had delivered on despite financial pressures. He emphasised the council's commitment to supporting families, particularly those struggling with the cost of living.
The extension of the school uniform grant is part of a broader package of measures designed to support residents, including an increase in the Council Tax Cost of Living Relief Fund household income threshold to £60,000. These initiatives aim to alleviate financial burdens on families and ensure that children can attend school with appropriate attire, regardless of their economic circumstances.
