Bromley Council has backed a motion supporting the appointment of a Disability Equality Champion for London, following a meeting of the council on Monday, July 7th, 2025.

The motion, proposed by Councillor Chloe-Jane Ross, calls on the Mayor of London to:

  • Appoint a senior Disability Equality Champion with real authority across the GLA Group.
  • Ensure the postholder has lived experience of disability and is adequately resourced.
  • Make the role accountable to the Assembly through regular reporting and scrutiny.
  • Task the Champion with co-producing a London Disability Action Plan within six months, in partnership with Disabled People's Organisations (DPOs).
  • Embed Disabled Londoners in the policy and decision-making processes at City Hall.

The champion would be adequately resourced and accountable to the Assembly, and tasked with co-producing a London Disability Action Plan within six months, in partnership with DPOs, and to embed Disabled Londoners in the policy and decision-making processes at City Hall. This London Disability Action Plan would address key priorities and focus areas for disabled Londoners.

The motion notes that the London Assembly had unanimously passed a motion calling for the appointment of a dedicated Disability Equality Champion for London in September 2024, but the Mayor had declined to act, citing the existing remit of the Deputy Mayor for Communities and Social Justice. In June 2025, the Assembly reaffirmed its position, passing a second motion urging the Mayor to implement this vital role.

The Bromley Council motion also resolves to:

  • Publicly support the London Assembly's motion.
  • Write to the Mayor of London, urging him to act on the Assembly's recommendation and engage fully with Disabled People's Organisations (DPOs).
  • Express solidarity with campaigners and Assembly Members advocating for this role.
  • Reaffirm Bromley's commitment to local disability equality through active partnership with Disabled residents and organisations.
