Islington Council's Planning Committee has approved a change of use application for a venue at 40 Finsbury Square, allowing it to operate as a flexible space including indoor competitive socialising.
The decision grants permission for the lower ground floor of 'The Gilbert' building to be used for either office space or for activities such as indoor competitive socialising, with ancillary bar, restaurant, and retail facilities. The approval also includes the introduction of ventilation extraction plant and equipment to serve a kitchen.

The venue is envisioned to include activities such as golf simulators and darts, described as a different way of socialising, sport-related. It's a way that you can compete against your friends in an indoor environment.
The venue has an operational capacity of 440 patrons.
The proposed operational hours are from 8 am to 11 pm Sunday to Thursday, and 8 am to 2:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays. Environmental Health colleagues raised no concerns or objections in principle regarding the late operating hours, and it is not considered that the differences between uses would warrant refusal. Amplified music will not be permitted on external terrace areas, and internal music will be at appropriate background levels secured through environmental health legislation. The venue operator has also carried out sound tests and has a condition within their lease to operate at 75 decibels to avoid breaching other occupiers' agreements.
An operational management plan has been submitted and would be secured by condition. This plan outlines dispersal strategies, venue security, and management of opening hours. The plan also details that internal music will be at appropriate background levels secured through environmental health legislation.
The change of use is considered acceptable given its location and surrounding uses, which are primarily commercial/business. There are very limited residential properties in the immediate vicinity. The proposal is not considered to have a detrimental impact on existing businesses or community spaces.
The applicant expects the operation to appeal to a corporate market and is aware of efforts to encourage more people into the city at weekends.
