Southwark Council's Planning Committee (Major Applications) B has approved the release of Section 106 funds totalling £442,947.75 for the redevelopment of Brimmington Park's sports facilities.

The project aims to upgrade aging infrastructure, enhance visibility, accessibility, and safety within the park. Plans include the installation of new artificial football pitches, accessible toilet facilities, an upgraded outdoor gym, a multi-use games area, skateable areas, and lowered basketball hoops.

The current sports facilities in Brimmington Park are in poor condition and in need of investment. Without this investment, further deterioration could lead to the facility needing to be closed off, reducing access to outdoor sports and recreation in an area experiencing increasing demand due to rapid population growth.

The redevelopment also seeks to increase biodiversity and improve the park's overall appearance. The project is in line with Southwark's 2030 Delivery Plan goal of staying well by providing accessible, high-quality outdoor sports facilities to enable residents to improve their health through physical activity.

Crucially, the new sports facilities are expected to widen access to sport and physical activity in line with the LBS Sport and Physical Activity Strategy. The project aims to increase participation in football, basketball, and skating, encouraging and supporting local residents to become more active. By increasing participation in physical activity, the project will contribute to improving motor skills, coordination, and mental wellbeing, while providing safe and supervised spaces for children and young people to play and develop.

The funds are specifically allocated towards the provision of a green link between Brimmington Park and the development along the Old Kent Road, the delivery of children's play equipment, the creation of new council-maintained public spaces, and the provision of communal open space in the vicinity of the site. This funding was secured through a financial obligation requiring the owner to pay an indexed contribution of £359,160.00 to the council.

The redevelopment of the Aldi site at 840 Old Kent Road was completed in January 2026 by Metropolitan Thames Valley housing association, comprising 171 affordable homes above an Aldi store. The project is also in line with The London Plan 2021 policies G4: Open Space, and G5: Urban Greening, by enhancing green space and maintaining or increasing the green cover on site, including tree canopy and planting.
