Hammersmith and Fulham Council has introduced a new policy to govern foreign travel undertaken by its members, aiming to ensure value for money and clarify cost responsibilities.
The policy, approved by the General Purpose Committee on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, addresses the absence of specific guidelines for councillors travelling abroad. Key provisions include the requirement for pre-approval of all expenditure and clear stipulations on who bears the costs when a member is accompanied by a guest, such as a Mayor's Consort.
Councillor Alex Sanderson, Councillor Nikos Souslous, and Councillor Jose Afonso were among those who approved the new guidelines. The policy also emphasizes the importance of adequate insurance to protect both the council and travelling members.
Previously, there were no defined rules for such travel, leading to potential ambiguities. The new framework seeks to provide a transparent and accountable approach to members' international engagements.
