Maria Christofi has been welcomed as the new Chief Executive of Newham Council, taking over from Interim Chief Executive Paul Martin.
Christofi's appointment was confirmed at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. She will be overseeing a range of key initiatives, including the implementation of the 'Community Neighbourhoods' model, which aims to divide the borough into eight areas to foster local leadership and resident participation. This model seeks to provide a consistent approach to neighbourhood working across the borough, building on existing strengths and community assets.
Further to this, Christofi will also oversee the progression of emergency safety scheme proposals for a Greenway diversion route. Her responsibilities extend to the 2026/27 Quarter One budget monitoring report, the Housing Services Improvement Programme, and the Annual Complaints Report for 2025-26.
