Lewisham Council has launched a new 'cash-first' approach to financial support for residents facing hardship. The Crisis and Resilience Fund, announced at the Council meeting on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, will provide direct cash payments to all Lewisham residents from the following day.
Deputy Mayor, speaking at the meeting, described the initiative as a significant change from previous support methods, stating, When people do experience financial crisis, the answer is clear. People need cash in their pocket. Cash brings choice and cash brings dignity.
The fund is a commitment from the Green Party manifesto and aims to offer residents more autonomy in how they address their financial difficulties.
The application process has been designed with input from individuals with lived experience of financial hardship to ensure it is as straightforward and accessible as possible. While the fund provides direct cash, the Council emphasised that cash first doesn't mean cash only.
Alongside the direct payments, residents will continue to receive financial advice and support for the local food bank network, with the Deputy Mayor highlighting the council's commitment to supporting and working with our incredible food bank network.
