Kennington Skate Park funding review sparks councillor concern

Councillors have expressed significant concern over the funding for Kennington Skate Park, with questions arising about its removal and potential reinstatement. The issue was a key discussion point at the Lambeth Council Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting held on Monday, 21 September 2026.

Councillor Claire Holland voiced her strong disappointment that capital funding, which had been secured in March 2026 to reopen the skate park, had been withdrawn without a clear explanation. Now this money has been taken away with no explanation and the future of Kenny is at risk, Councillor Holland stated. She emphasised the critical need for young people to have access to safe recreational opportunities.

Officers at the meeting confirmed that the funding for Kennington Skate Park had not been definitively removed but was undergoing a review to identify alternative funding streams. However, Councillor Holland challenged this assertion, revealing that an officer had indicated the project's viability was contingent on securing Section 106 contributions. This suggests that the funding has indeed been removed from the original budget, with its future now dependent on these external contributions.

The lack of communication surrounding the project has also drawn criticism. Councillor Dominic Lynch reported, We've had radio silence on this project from the Greens. No comms with local councillors, so residents are confused and angry. This communication gap has left both councillors and residents in the dark regarding the skate park's future.

The potential consequences for young people if the skate park's future remains uncertain are significant. Councillor Holland warned, Young people need to be given the opportunity to make safe choices for themselves. Their futures are at risk. Echoing these concerns, Councillor Dominic Lynch noted that Green imposed delays are now leading to ASB in the park, with residents getting in contact with me, telling me that their young children feel unsafe walking around the park.
