Islington Council expands apprenticeships and staff support to combat children's workforce crisis
Islington Council is implementing a comprehensive strategy to address a critical shortage in its children's workforce, focusing on apprenticeships and enhanced support for staff.
The Children and Young People Scrutiny Committee met to review progress on recommendations aimed at attracting, growing, and sustaining a skilled and committed workforce. Councillor Fin Craig, Chair of the committee, highlighted the importance of a happy, committed workforce
for the success of children's services.

A key focus of the council's efforts is the pipeline of talent,
which includes offering apprenticeships, internships, volunteer opportunities, and work experience. The Directorate has been working with educational institutions and community organisations to create a comprehensive and engaging approach to attract young people from diverse backgrounds into careers in children's services. Specific apprenticeship examples include roles in Learning and Achievement, with work experience opportunities available in the SEND department.

Beyond apprenticeships and internships, the council is also focusing on professional growth and leadership development through its Children and Families People Plan and Workforce Plan. Specific formal shadowing and mentoring opportunities are currently being developed to further support staff.
The council also reaffirmed its commitment to valuing all professions within the children's workforce, with Islington having achieved success in national awards recognising the achievements of its staff.
