Wandsworth Council invests £767,000 in waste and street cleansing

Wandsworth Council's Cabinet has approved a £767,000 annual investment package aimed at enhancing waste, street cleansing, and enforcement services across the borough.

The decision, made at a Cabinet meeting on Monday, October 12, 2026, will see the introduction of two additional jet washing vehicles and crews, an increase in street sweeping frequency on high footfall streets, and investment in fly-tipping prevention measures.

These enhancements are part of a broader strategy to improve the cleanliness and overall street scene of Wandsworth. The package also includes targeted investment to reduce recycling contamination and a trial of fox-proof food caddies.

Specific fly-tipping prevention measures will include the development of a multi-year fly-tipping strategy and the use of stencils. This comes after a previous free bulky waste collection service, intended to reduce fly-tipping, instead saw an increase in collected fly-tipped waste of up to 65 tonnes per month during 2025.

To bolster enforcement efforts, the council will recruit additional monitoring and enforcement officers, including a second Assistant Director of Waste, Street Cleansing and Enforcement. These measures are intended to provide greater oversight and a more robust response to issues affecting residents.

The report noted that £800,000 of the investment's cost will be recouped through adjustments to the bulky waste service, which will now incur a charge of £30 per collection. This adjustment aims to balance the increased investment with the need for financial sustainability.
