Neglect has overtaken emotional abuse as the primary reason for children in Haringey to be placed on a child protection plan, according to a recent report considered by the Children and Young People's Scrutiny Panel on Monday, 14 July 2025.
The report, which covered the fourth quarter of 2024/25 with updates for April and May 2025, highlighted key trends in children's social care performance. The Public Reports Pack provided to the panel, included an overview of performance data and trends related to children on Child Protection Plans (CPP).
According to the Children's Social Care Performance Q1 to June 2025 report, neglect has increased to replace emotional abuse as the main reason for a child being put on a protection plan in the past six months.
The shift towards neglect as the primary concern comes amid a period where referrals to children's social care via the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) are lower than in the previous four years, with 1,561 referrals in the past six months, according to the Children's Social Care Performance Q1 to June 2025 report.
Other key findings from the report include:
- The rate of children on child protection plans was 39 (209 children), which aligns with the national average.
- Most plans were open for less than six months.
- Health assessments were at 93%, comparing favourably to statistical neighbours and England rates.
- Children with up-to-date immunisation reduced further from 51% to 43%, which is below both statistical neighbours and England.
- At the end of March 2025, dental checks were at 87%, higher than before the pandemic.
The Children and Young People's Scrutiny Panel is scheduled to meet again on 9 September 2025.
