Bexley Council is set to revive its Local Authority Funding and Resourcing Challenges scrutiny sub-group, a decision made during a recent meeting of the Finance & Corporate Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee. The council faces continued financial and external pressures, requiring proactive measures to ensure value for money and high-quality services. The Medium Term Financial Strategy (MTFS) outlines a challenging financial outlook.

The move comes as the council grapples with these ongoing financial pressures and seeks to ensure effective resource allocation. The committee convened on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

The decision to re-establish the sub-group was confirmed in the meeting's minutes, signalling a renewed focus on the financial challenges facing the local authority. The Finance & Corporate Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee can establish sub-groups to undertake elements of its work programme , according to the Agenda Frontsheet.

The sub-group will explore the Local Authority's funding and resourcing challenges and look at how economic fluctuations affect local authorities' operations, decision-making, service delivery, and overall sustainability. It will consider areas such as revenue shortfalls, increased demand for services, and cost-saving measures and help identify strategies for enhancing resilience and effectiveness in the face of economic uncertainty.

Previously, the sub-group postponed its work until data from legacy systems was fully transferred into the new Property Asset Management system, Tech Forge Cloud. Once operational, the system will provide a clearer view of assets and their associated costs.

In addition to scrutiny, the council is considering service reviews, technical assessments, and the use of reserves as alternative solutions to the financial challenges, as well as transformation programmes. As Ross Brown stated, we are deploying a number of different tools and techniques to try and shut the budget gap although we will be predominantly relying on transformation that's certainly not the only game in town .
