Redbridge is facing a rise in measles cases following outbreaks in some London schools, the Redbridge Health Committee heard at its meeting on 25 September 2025.
The Director of Public Health and Commissioning provided a verbal update to the Health Scrutiny Sub-committee, noting that while there had been no outbreaks in Redbridge, four cases were reported in December in children under 10. The committee also heard that Redbridge had achieved approximately 82% MMR vaccine uptake, against a target of 95%.
Engagement work has been undertaken with local communities and primary care partners to promote immunisation. Regarding measles, engagement work was ongoing to outline key messaging around immunisation to protect children and young people. A Spring booster of the Covid vaccine was being undertaken, with a coverage rate of 42% for Redbridge residents, the second highest in north east London.
The committee discussed engagement work underway to promote immunisation and protect children and young people. They also noted that changes relating to the MMR2 vaccine were due to be announced to protect children at an earlier stage, and consideration would be given regarding how this information is communicated to parents.
The agenda for the meeting also included discussion of the Barts Health NHS Trust Speak-up Guardian, updates from relevant bodies, and the sub-committee work programme for 2025/26.
