Lewisham Council is seeking a new path forward for the restoration of the Ladywell Playtower after the withdrawal of its initial restoration partner. The decision was made during a Mayor and Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, where officials outlined a 12-month roadmap to revitalise the iconic building.
Councillor James-J Walsh, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Regeneration and Planning, addressed the challenges facing the project, citing rising costs due to post-Brexit supply chain issues, global inflation, and the financial instability following the Liz Truss mini-budget. He noted that the initial £4.5 million project had escalated to a £7 million undertaking.
Despite these setbacks, Councillor Walsh affirmed the council's commitment to the project, acknowledging the Ladywell Society for keeping the community engaged and residents for their continued hope and passion. He also noted an amendment to the third recommendation in the report, noting himself as the Cabinet Member for Inclusive Regeneration and Planning.
The approved roadmap includes:
- Updating the building condition survey to provide potential partners with a clear understanding of the Playtower's current state.
- Engaging with residents throughout the process.
Councillor Walsh expressed a desire to involve residents in the journey, ensuring they are aware of the decision and how they can participate in the roadmap.
Councillor Ese Erheriene congratulated Councillor Walsh and the team, highlighting the nostalgic significance of the Playtower for Lewisham residents. She emphasized the importance of building and developing while preserving local landmarks. Councillor Erheriene also expressed the expectation that partners would bring similar energy to the project, referencing the Bakerloo Line extension as an example of a project that has faced similar challenges with rising costs over time.
