Greenwich Council has been asked to share footfall data with town centre businesses to help them understand customer trends and support local economies.

The request came during a council meeting on Wednesday, 29 October 2025, when Councillor Charlie Davis, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, questioned Councillor Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Business, Greenwich Supports and Environmental Services, about making the data available on a regular basis.

Councillor Davis noted that footfall data is already being shared at the Eltham Town Centre Partnership to help establish underlying footfall on the High Street. Councillor Smith responded that she recognised the value of sharing footfall data and other information held by the council with a wider audience, beyond just the Town Centre Partnerships, to monitor and support the health of all town centres.

Councillor Smith responded positively to the request, stating that she recognised the value of sharing footfall data and other information held by the council. To improve accessibility, she said she had asked officers to begin publishing the data on a quarterly basis through the council's Business Bulletin newsletter, starting in November. Currently, there are no plans to make the data available through other channels, such as an online dashboard or API.

I recognise the significant value of sharing footfall data and other information we hold as part of our efforts to monitor and support the health of our town centres, so this reaches a wider audience beyond our Town Centre Partnerships, Councillor Smith said.

The Business Bulletin newsletter reaches a wide audience of businesses and stakeholders across the borough, making it an effective platform for sharing updates, including wider business support programmes, networking, town centre events and other relevant updates, Councillor Smith said. She encouraged all businesses to subscribe to the bulletin to stay informed.

I strongly encourage all businesses to subscribe to the bulletin to stay informed about key issues, including wider business support programmes, networking and town centre events, and other relevant updates.
