Enfield Council has been urged to decommission the Shires Estate Tower blocks, following a motion put forward at a council meeting on Wednesday, 12 November 2025.
Councillor Lee Chamberlain put forward a motion regarding the Shires Estate Tower blocks, instructing the Cabinet Member for Housing, Ayten Guzel, to act and put in an immediate and hard target date for the full decommissioning of the blocks.
The motion notes that a structural report in June 2022 identified that the Shires Estate Tower blocks were in danger of disproportionate collapse in the event a building panel was compromised. The motion also highlights what Councillor Chamberlain describes as the Administration's continued failure to decommission the blocks, leaving residents still living in them. The motion does not provide specific reasons given by the Administration for this delay.
The meeting also included discussion of a recommendation from the local auditor, the adoption of the Fairer Enfield Policy 2026-30, and several other motions. The Fairer Enfield Policy 2026-30 aims to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in the borough, ensuring equality and diversity for all who live, learn, earn in or visit Enfield, which would include residents of the Shires Estate. Councillors were also expected to note the treasury management mid-year update, and consider changes to committee memberships. The meeting was held at the Civic Centre, Silver Street, Enfield.
