Bedfont Lakes are set for a major upgrade, with Hounslow Council eyeing National Lottery funding to transform the popular green space. The council aims to create a 'visionary' renewal of the site, improving the space for both residents and the council.
Gaye Galvin, Head of Parks, Development and Green Infrastructure, told the Bedfont Lakes Trust Panel on Wednesday that the site was tired and in need of improvement.
Community Infrastructure Levy funding has already been used to address health and safety concerns, including bridge and decking repairs, as well as the installation of new bird hides and children's play equipment. Landscape consultants and an architect are currently reviewing the site's history to inform future developments.
The council has begun a consultation, expected to last around six months, to gather feedback from residents and the panel on potential improvements. According to the Minutes Public Pack 20112024 Bedfont Lakes Trust Panel, the team are exploring various options for enhancing Bedfont Lakes and seeking input from both residents and the council.
Ms. Galvin highlighted the importance of exploring various funding avenues, with the National Lottery being a key target. She also noted that the site's facilities are nearing the end of their lifespan, necessitating significant upgrades. Currently, the site is most easily accessible by car, and the council is considering alternatives such as safe cycle routes. They are also exploring potential commercial opportunities, such as educational initiatives, to ensure the site's financial sustainability, while preserving its essential wildness
and ecological value.
