Islington Council is expanding its food waste collection service to include flats above shops, aligning with a statutory requirement for all local authorities to provide such services by April next year. Funding has been secured for this expansion, with additional revenue expected through the next local government settlement.
The announcement was made at the Environment, Climate and Transport Scrutiny Committee meeting on 25 November 2025, where councillors discussed various environmental initiatives and reviewed the committee's work plan.
Islington has already implemented food waste collection services for most properties and is now focusing on extending the service to flats above shops, according to the Public reports pack for the meeting. The expansion follows a successful trial on Holloway Road. Due to space constraints, flats above shops will receive nightly collections. The committee had previously received an update on waste and recycling services at a meeting on 21 October 2025, detailed in the Minutes from that meeting.
