Abbey Road transfer station in Brent is undergoing improvements, and options are being explored to resume accepting trade waste at the site as soon as possible. This information was included in the Contracts and Operations Update presented at the West London Waste Authority (WLWA) meeting on Tuesday, 2 December 2025.
Trade waste inputs from borough collection vehicles and trade waste customers were diverted to alternative sites from July 2025, due to staff shortages. Recruitment and training efforts have since restored staffing levels. Improvement works have also taken place on the site's infrastructure, equipment and systems during this quieter period. Site health, safety and environmental rules have also been updated to reflect the changes and ensure best practice.
Borough waste inputs resumed in September, and operations are now running smoothly. Further infrastructure investment is planned to repair the west upper section of the transfer station and remediate the road surfacing of the upper concrete level and access road. The document does not specify a timeline for the planned infrastructure investment.
According to the 2026-27 Budget, a decrease in trade income at Abbey Road is expected due to potential closure when works are carried out to the site. The projected decrease in trade income is £0.6 million. The 2026-27 Budget states, The 2026/27 budget is £3.4 million, which is a £0.6 million decrease from 2025/26 and reflects the potential closure to trade waste as the site is closed for essential works.
However, there will be savings against the waste disposal of this material (approximately 50% of the income) which will be recognised within waste transport and disposal costs.
Trade waste prices may increase. The Authority is asked to approve the possible requirement to increase trade and construction prices and delegate authority to the Managing Director in consultation with the Treasurer to change these in year should the need arise. According to the 2026-27 Budget, changes and further charges may be introduced during the 2026/27 year in response to market conditions and where appropriate in consultation with L.B Brent. It is recommended that delegated authority be given to the Managing Director in consultation with the Treasurer to change charges in year should the need arise.
