A member of the public has raised concerns about dog fouling in Highbury and Mildmay wards at a recent Islington Council meeting.
Councillor Angelo Weekes, Executive Member for Community Safety, responded to the question from Tyreen Dewan, stating that residents are rightly fed up with this dogfowling
and outlined the council's existing enforcement powers.
Islington enforces dog control measures through a borough-wide Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). According to Councillor Weekes, the PSPO includes tools such as requiring dogs to be on leads. He also stated that he is personally exploring whether we can increase the fines up to £1,000 for each dogfowling offence
and would reinvest the income directly into council services.
While the current fine amounts for dog fouling offences under the existing PSPO were not explicitly stated, Councillor Weekes is exploring increasing them up to £1,000 per offence. The timeline for this exploration and a decision is not yet known.
Tyreen Dewan asked what additional resources might be planned to deter dog fouling in Highbury Fields and Mildmay Park. Councillor Weekes urged residents to keep reporting incidents so that patrol officers can be tasked to those areas to spot offenders. The revenue generated from increased fines would be reinvested directly into council services.
