A new report has revealed a concerning trend in Ealing, with one in five young people now vaping. The findings, presented at the Ealing Council Health and Wellbeing Board meeting on Thursday, 26 June 2025, highlight the increasing popularity of vaping among children and adolescents, both locally and nationally.
The report, titled A generation at risk: Vaping and young people, estimates that around 5,947 young people in Ealing have tried vaping in 2024. This rise is reflected in the Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) smokefree Great Britain youth survey 2024, which shows a significant increase in vaping among 11-17 year olds since 2013.
According to the report, a significant shift has occurred: most children who vape have never smoked a cigarette, unlike previous years. The report also indicates that social influences and mental health issues are primary drivers for vaping among young people. Ealing children say mental health issues are the main reasons they vape,
the report states.
To combat this rising trend, the report outlines several strategies, including supporting the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which proposes to ban the advertising, promotion, and sponsorship of vapes and nicotine products. The bill also introduces a licensing regime for the retail sale of tobacco products, including vaping products, and new powers for the Ealing trading standards team.
The public reports pack provided to the attendees of the meeting included the Annual Public Health Report and the report on Ealing Hospital and the Community Diagnostic Centre.
