Barnet Council is set to embrace new employment rights legislation, with a motion passed at the recent Council meeting welcoming the Employment Rights Bill. The bill, described as the biggest upgrade in workers' rights in a generation,
introduces a range of new protections for employees.
Councillor Tony Vourou, who proposed the motion, highlighted key provisions including guaranteed hours, an end to exploitative 'fire and rehire' practices, and the introduction of unpaid bereavement leave. The Employment Rights Act also includes strengthening existing tipping laws by requiring employers to consult with workers when developing or revising their tipping policies, and establishing the Fair Work Agency to ensure people can exercise their rights. Councillor Vourou stated that these changes are believed to benefit both workers and businesses within Barnet.
