EV charging points: Council to deploy pavement gullies

Richmond upon Thames Council is set to deploy pavement gullies to facilitate the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging points, a move that aims to bolster the borough's green infrastructure.

The decision was discussed and confirmed during a Council meeting held on Tuesday, 27 January 2026. While the meeting covered a wide range of topics including constitutional amendments, the net-zero target, and housing policies, the deployment of EV charging infrastructure through pavement gullies was specifically addressed in a written response to a question from Councillor Wren.

This initiative is part of the council's broader commitment to sustainability and its ambition to achieve a net-zero borough by 2043. The use of pavement gullies is a practical solution to overcome space constraints often associated with installing EV charging points in urban environments. This approach allows for charging infrastructure to be integrated more seamlessly into existing streetscapes, potentially making EV charging more accessible for residents.
