Southwark Council's Planning Committee is set to review plans for a new nursing home on Asylum Road, aiming to address the growing demand for elderly care in the borough.
The need for the nursing home is supported by an IDM report, dated 16 April 2024, which identified Asylum Road as a suitable site, and a Nursing Care Needs Analysis undertaken by ASC in August 2024, which highlight the increasing demand for nursing home care, particularly south of the Old Kent Road. These reports are referenced in the Public reports pack.
The committee will consider the release of £200,000 from Section 106 agreements to fund consultant services for the project at 128 – 148 Asylum Road. These funds, accumulated from planning consents 14/AP/2000 and 12/AP/3558, will be used to engage Jones Lang LaSelle, a specialist consultant, to manage the market-led development opportunity. The allocation of the Health S106 monies will also be used to cover some additional associated costs and contingency costs, identified in aggregate as £50,000.00. These include production of the marketing brochure, including photography, and site surveys.
The decision aligns with the council's corporate policy, Southwark 2030, and the Delivery Plan 2022-2026, which aim to provide decent homes for all and improve access to quality residential and home nursing.
In March 2024, the council held a community engagement event to discuss its consideration of using the site for a new nursing home. The proposals were met with a positive response. Further consultation will be conducted as the planning process progresses.
The project aims to provide 24/7 nursing support, including accommodation and specialised dementia care, to elderly residents in need.
