Havering Council has committed to planting 41 new street trees across the borough by the end of the current planting season. The announcement was made during a council meeting on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
Councillor Barry Muggleston, Cabinet Member for Environment and Deputy Mayor of Havering, confirmed the plan, stating that the council's focus is on planting the right tree in the right place
with appropriate aftercare to ensure their long-term establishment.
Councillor Trevor McKeever raised concerns about the potential for a repeat of the 2023 incident where 4,000 newly planted saplings were cut down. Councillor Muggleston acknowledged this as a mistake by a council officer, which had since been rectified with replanting. He also highlighted the recent launch of a tree warden scheme, designed to support the council's tree officers.
