Havering Council is set to update its contaminated land inspection strategy, with a revised plan expected by the end of the 2026-2027 financial year. The strategy will prioritise legacy landfill sites based on risk.
Councillor Barry Muggleston, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, stated that the council's approach to legacy landfills would be addressed in the updated strategy. He confirmed that Legacy landfills will prioritise according to risk.
The council currently has approximately 46 legacy landfill sites within the borough. Some of these have been remediated as part of land redevelopment, while others remain undeveloped or are used as public open spaces.
Any recommendations arising from the updated strategy regarding legacy landfills will be considered within the resources available to the team and in partnership with the Environmental Agency, Councillor Muggleston added. He also highlighted that investigations into contaminated land must now be achieved through existing resources, with finances being a key factor.
