A business in Tower Hamlets has been fined a total of £22,800 following an underage knife sale and the discovery that it had been selling alcohol without a licence for approximately two years.
The prosecution case, presented to the Tower Hamlets Licensing Committee on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, involved a company, its director, and a seller. The seller was fined £10,000 for the underage knife sale.
During the investigation into the knife sale, officers discovered that the premises had also been operating without the necessary licence to sell alcohol. This led to an additional fine of £12,800 for the unlicensed alcohol sales.
Jonathan Melnick, Principal Enforcement Lawyer for Tower Hamlets, presented the report on licensing-related prosecutions and appeals for 2025. He explained that the council acts as a Licensing Authority responsible for monitoring compliance, taking enforcement action, and responding to appeals.
Mr. Melnick noted that court backlogs can cause delays in case conclusions. He also highlighted that while this case was significant, other prosecution cases concluded in 2025 primarily involved underage sales of alcohol.
