Barnet Council is set to broaden its engagement with youth organisations by appointing a Mayor's Cadet from a diverse range of groups, including Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, Police, Fire, NHS cadets, and other uniformed youth organisations.
The decision was formalised during a Barnet Council meeting held on Tuesday, 8 July 2025, where Councillors Barry Rawlings and Peter Zinkin introduced a joint motion to expand the Mayor's Cadet selection process.
The motion builds upon the council's longstanding relationship with the Sea Training Corps Training Ship Broadsword, Hendon Unit, which was established by council resolution in 2003. This decision has resulted in Training Ship Broadsword being adopted by the Council and being requested annually to appoint a Mayor's Cadet to enable the cadet to be involved in civic events. The new initiative aims to create connections with all cadet detachments and uniformed youth organisations in Barnet.
Starting in May 2026, at the Annual Council meeting, a Mayor's Cadet will be appointed annually from one of the participating cadet detachments or organisations on a rotational basis. Relevant officers have been instructed to coordinate the arrangements with the various organisations.
This decision reflects Barnet Council's commitment to recognising and supporting the contributions of young people in the community and fostering stronger relationships with youth organisations across the borough. The initiative also aligns with the council's Defence Employers Recognition Armed Forces Covenant 'Gold' Award, demonstrating continued support for the cadet movement.
