Tower Hamlets Council's General Purposes Committee has reviewed its constitution and work plan, with councillors stressing the importance of the document as a living document
that requires continuous engagement.
During a meeting on Monday, 29 June 2026, the committee discussed its terms of reference, membership, and meeting dates for the upcoming municipal year. The General Purposes Committee's responsibilities include electoral matters, personnel issues, and byelaws. It also has responsibility for considering and making recommendations to Full Council on the introduction, amendment or revocation of new byelaws and can consider and make non-material changes to the Council's Constitution.
Councillor Kabir Ahmed suggested a training session on the committee's remit would be beneficial, particularly for new councillors, to ensure a better understanding of the types of issues that fall under its purview. This was agreed and will be added to the work plan.
Councillor Shafi Ahmed acknowledged the work of the constitution group, highlighting ongoing efforts to adapt to an evolving council with new members, protocols, and working methods. Councillor Peter Golds emphasised that the constitution is a living document
that requires continuous engagement from both members and officers to ensure it best serves the borough.
