Haringey Council has re-established its Corporate Parenting Advisory Committee to provide dedicated oversight of the council's responsibilities towards children in care and care leavers.
The committee's re-establishment was agreed by the Cabinet on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. Its purpose is to ensure that the health, education, and access to employment for children in care are maximised, to monitor the quality of care provided, and to ensure that young people leaving care have sustainable arrangements for their future.
Councillor Georgia Twigg, Cabinet Member for Children and Schools, highlighted the importance of this role, stating that all Councillors, when they are elected, take on the responsibility of corporate parents to children that are looked after by their local authority. This means that they have a duty to take an interest in the well being and development of these children who are one of the most vulnerable groups in society.
The Corporate Parenting Advisory Committee is distinct from the Children and Young People’s Scrutiny Panel, as it focuses specifically on looked-after children and care leavers and reports directly to the Cabinet. It is important to note that the committee does not have the authority to incur expenditure or make budgetary decisions. Instead, it can be serviced from within existing business unit resources, meaning no specific budget is allocated to the committee itself.
